What is Perinatal Mental Health?

Perinatal mental health refers to the emotional well-being of individuals during pregnancy and up to one year after childbirth. It encompasses a range of conditions from mild mood changes to more severe disorders like postpartum depression, anxiety, and OCD.

Who is effected?

  • Women:

    • Postpartum Depression (PPD): Approximately 10-15% of women experience postpartum depression after childbirth (American Psychological Association).
    • Anxiety Disorders: Up to 15% of pregnant women and 10% of postpartum women experience anxiety disorders (World Health Organization).
  • Men:

    • Postnatal Depression: While less commonly discussed, approximately 10% of new fathers experience postnatal depression (Paulson & Bazemore, 2010).
    • Anxiety: Around 5-10% of new fathers experience anxiety during the postnatal period (Paulson & Bazemore, 2010).
  • Couples:

    • Relationship Distress: It's estimated that 30-50% of couples experience a decline in relationship satisfaction during the transition to parenthood, which can contribute to perinatal mental health challenges (American Psychological Association).
  • Overall Impact:

    • Perinatal mental health issues not only affect the individual's emotional well-being but also have significant implications for the family unit and the child's development. Addressing these issues early can help mitigate long-term effects on family dynamics and children's outcomes.

After receiving specific training and having experience in supporting individuals through pregnancy, childbirth, and the adjustment to parenthood, we are dedicated to understanding and addressing the unique psychological challenges that can arise during this period.

We offer a safe and non-judgmental space where clients can explore their feelings and concerns related to pregnancy and parenting. The therapeutic approach is tailored to meet the client's individual needs, whether they are experiencing mood swings, anxiety about childbirth, adjusting to new roles, or dealing with more serious mental health issues.

The focus is on helping clients build resilience, cope with stress, and develop effective strategies for managing their emotions during this significant life transition. The goal is to empower clients to navigate challenges and enhance their overall well-being for themselves and their families.

It is important to know that it is beneficial to collaborate with other healthcare providers, such as obstetricians, midwives, and pediatricians, to ensure holistic care for clients.
